Everyone needs guidance . . .
If you've checked out other parts of this site you might feel we've taken a hard line. Why do we pressure kids to go to university when they have little interest or skill potential in other areas?
It's a tough question, but consider this: what do you think is happening as the result of streaming kids through high school and cramming them into already overcrowded and overpriced universities? Ask yourself honestly; are you doing them a favor by convincing them they should come out of school in 4 years with a degree in Philosophy and a $50,000 debt?
Don't get us wrong, we think education is critical to everyone's development, but here's a slice of reality -- In record numbers, university graduates in this country can't find meaningful work.
Give your kids a break! If you truly want them to be happy, help them make the right choice.
Why would a Trade be the right choice?
The Trades have been given a bad rap for generations, and we're still not sure why, but we have some ideas. In the 80's, high school kids were told that they'd amount to nothing if they did not go to University, and even College wasn't good enough!
The reality is, here we are in the 21st Century and that bleak picture has turned out the opposite for most 30-somethings today. People who took up a Trade are some of the best paid, most stable adults of their generation while others who went to University or College spent years trying to find work in a distant related field, while others didn't find work at all!
We're not saying that College or University is wrong, but it is certainly far from the only viable option for young people today. In many cases, it is probably the best option! Unless your child wants to be a Doctor, Lawyer, or something that requires that Degree for them to advance in their chosen field, perhaps it's time to look at all of the options.
You know your kids, and you might even know them better than they know themselves right now. What do they like doing most? What can they use their talents on in the real world that will translate into a solid career?
Investigate this site, and Explore the Trades. Read the descriptions of what Tradespeople are doing in their day to day jobs, and see if any of them relates to what your child loves to do. It's entirely possible that a Trade is the right fit!
