Still In School?

Consider a Career in Construction

Construction isn't all hard work.

Working in a skilled trade requires creativity, ingenuity, training and specialized knowledge.

Why pursue a Trade instead of College or University?

Ultimately, the choice is up to you. Right now, you have some very big decisions to make, and it is probably one, if not the most stressful time of your life.

The truth is, you don't have to be stressed about what can be the most fun decision-making process of your life. All you need to know to start making choices are two key things:

  1. Know Yourself
  2. Know Your Options

What do we mean by these two questions? Read on...

Know Yourself

Getting to know yourself is one of the most important things you do as an adult. It is what shapes right and wrong decisions that affect our lives each and every day. Our choices directly involve our own happiness, and nobody's influence should be more important than your own.

What your friends, or your parents, or your siblings, etc., think is right for you to do with your life is ok for them, but what do you want to do with your life?

  • Do love colour, and like to Paint?
  • Do you fantacize of working with blowtorches and powertools?
  • Do you want to be the guy who is in charge?
  • Do you love the outdoors?
  • Want to Travel and see Canada... or the World?

Get to know what it is that you like to do, or enjoy doing. After all, if you love to do you will never truly work a day in your life, because you will love what you are doing!

Know Your Options

Right now is the most exciting time in your life. Your future can only be written by you, because ultimately, you are the only one who makes the choice.

There are several different choices available to you once you complete high school, but some of these choices come with heavy restrictions, or financial burdens.

For most of you, a $50,000.00 education, especially one that will not guarantee work for you once you graduate is just not an option. You might as well toss that pile of cash into a heap and light it on fire!

Success Story

Jennifer loves Art Class.

It's her favorite subject in school. She's been thinking about going to University to study Fine Art, or possibly College to study Graphic Design.

Jennifer does not have a scholorship fund, and if she decides to go to College or University she will have to use O.S.A.P. to pay for her schooling. On top of that, she'll have to take a part-time job to support her living expenses while she learns because there isn't a College or University close to her parents' home.

Jennifer learned about the Carpentry Apprenticeship program, and found out that there was a Local Union office in her own home town. She loves sculpture in her art classes the most, and having worked with wood and getting an "A" on an industrial furnature assignment she made for her final Grade 12 project, she decided that this might be the best option for her.

Instead of going into debt which she may never be able to pay off as a Sculptor, Jennifer will get her ticket to "sculpt" fine furnature and cabinets, and by the time she gets her "Ticket", she'll have enough money saved up for a new car, and a downpayment on her own house!

Now that's thinking!
